Trail del Marganai postponed to October 31st 2020

Until the last minute we tried everything possible in order to make the Marganai Trail 2020 happen as planned on March 15th 2020, but now we have to surrender.
We are forced to postpone the race to October 31, 2020.

The instructions of the recent Governmental Decree (4 March 2020) leave no choice and besides the Rescue forces and associations that usually guarantee assistance and safety during the race, unfortunately cannot attend, because of the situation of national emergency in progress (coronavirus).
We are facing a huge challenge these weeks and we hope to succeed at overcoming it. The national measures to slow down the contagion of COVID-19 are an important effort to limit the damage and here we are talking about both human lives and economic damage, that can heavily affect our families.

The Marganai Trail has so far been a party, a place where at the end of the race, with a beer, one felt among friends and brothers.
In the coming days, registrations on krono.run will be reopened.

Let’s meet on October 31st: a well-deserved cold beer, after many km, will await you. 

ITRA certification and qualifying race for UTMB

As for the previous four editions, the 3 races of the 5th Trail del Marganai are certified by ITRA (International Trail Running Association), which we are members of.

Long trail finishers (58 km with 3000m D +) will award 3 ITRA points, those of the mid distance (36 km with 1900m D +) 2 ITRA points and 1 ITRA point for the runners who reach the finish line of the short race (22 km with 1050m D +).

Furthermore, our request for both the 58 km and the 36 km to be admitted as qualifying races for the UTMB, Ultra Trail del Monte Bianco, has been accepted.

Even if with a little delay compared to previous years, we kept to our commitment to maintain our trail focused on the athletes and their benefits.

Less than 20 days left to register: don’t miss Buggerru and this splendid area of south west Sardinia, called Marganai.

We can’t wait to get the trail party started!

 

Solidarity 2020

The Marganai Trail has been pursuing some important goals since the very beginning, such as promoting the territory where the competition takes place and support local solidarity projects.

This year we decided to donate one Euro for each registered athlete and one for each pasta party voucher, purchased by those who do not compete.

We also asked all local the accommodation facilities (indicated for free on the ‘Hospitality‘ page), if they deem it appropriate, at the end of the event, to make an additional offer, that will be fully donated to the joint project.

The organization of the competition is not-for-profit, so any positive surplus of this 5th edition will be added to the collected amount.

We asked the associations in Buggerru, who are working with us, to aid in identifying a suitable cause for the donation.
We will take care of publicizing progress of the initiative.

So, if you were still looking for a reason to register, besides the beauty of the itineraries and the desire to join us, having a great time in friendship, remember you can contribute to something worthy!

It is easy to fly to Buggerru


Coming to run the Marganai Trail is simpler than it might seem.
In March it is easy to find a flight at a very affordable price!

The closest airport to Buggerru, a village that will see both the start and the finish of the race on March 15, is Cagliari-Elmas, about 80 kilometers away.

Buying a plane ticket a few weeks in advance allows for substantial savings.

In March the main airlines that connect Cagliari to Italy and the rest of the world are:

The Paths of the Trail del Marganai 2020

Here are the paths of the Marganai Trail 2020 between news and confirmations.

To begin with, even if you find them on the site menu, these are the links to the related pages:

Tracks with relative distances and altimeters are still for a few weeks to be considered temporary, that is, they could still undergo some minor modification or adjustment.

All the routes will start from the town of Buggerru and without delay along the coast they will proceed inland.

The 22 km has a completely new path.

The 34 km is almost completely new, because it shares with the tracks of the past editions the segment from the Temple of Antas to the caves of Su Mannau which however will be done in the opposite direction to what was done previously.
For those who have already covered it, in this edition it will be downhill!

The 56 km track is the one that keeps the most distance with what was done in past years.
From the Temple of Antas we will continue along the Roman Cave path and head towards Malacalzetta.
Once left the ruins of the buildings of the old mines, we face the climb that instead of going towards the descent to the mines of Reigraxius will stretch up to the Punta Campu Spina, the highest point of all the routes.
From here, after the big descent into the woods, we will head towards Arenas and, kilometer after kilometer, up to the vaults of the Su Mannau Caves.
Here he will rejoin us on the new section of the 34 until we arrive.

The last kilometers of all three races will offer a spectacular view of the coasts of Buggerru and Fluminimaggiore.

Contributing in some way to charity is one of the objectives that the Trail del Marganai has always tried to pursue.

In previous editions we gave our contribution by supporting voluntary associations that guarantee us safety during the event, buying and donating portable DVD players with cartoons for their little guests to the pediatric CTO of Iglesias, contributing to the preparation of the inclusive play area in Domusnovas.

In line with what has been done in the past, we have decided that this year two euros for each registered will be allocated to a social project that we will shortly define.

Now it is up to all of you, with your inscriptions, to determine what the amount to be allocated to the next project will be!

the third edition of our Trail del Marganai is close!

IMPORTANT: REMEMBER TO TAKE AND SHOW THE MANDATORY EQUIPMENT WHEN YOU GET THE RACE PACK, OTHERWISE BIBS CAN NOT BE DELIVERED!

The whole event takes place at the “Cartiera del Consorzio Natura Viva” in Domusnovas, including the bib and race pack delivery stand, starting and arrival line and the pasta party after the race.

How to arrive: once you arrive in Domusnovas, follow the indications for “Grotte di S.Giovanni”, which are situated at about 2 km from the village’s center (Google Maps -> https://www.traildelmarganai.org/en/come-arrivare/)
Immediately after the Cartiera on the way to the San Giovanni Cave, you will find a parking area.

For all athletes participating in one of the three races

We highly recommend to use a headlamp (or a small torch) when you run through the caves, because there is no illumination inside!
Please check the mandatory equipment carefully.
In order to participate, a prerequisite condition is proving possession of a medical certificate for participating in athletics competitive events. Deadline is on Thursday 08 March.
Without medical certificate we will deliver the race pack, but not the bib! This means you are not considered as a participating runner and your eventual presence on the race route would be under your own full responsibility.
The timing chip will be read before start and after arrival. Only for the 52km race there is an intermedium record at the stand situated nearby the Temple of Antas.
Each food and drink stand, is also a checkpoint for the athletes passage. Please, be helpful with the person in charge of reading your bib number. The missing record of your passage may lead to disqualification.
With the race pack delivery we are going to ask confirmation of your mobile number (the one we can find you at during the race). You will find a number for emergencies on the bib, but we also recommend to store it on your phone: 3339447383. We suggest to disconnect data services, in order to keep your phone battery charged.
The more athletes collect the race pack and bib on Saturday afternoon, the less the pre-race procedures are going last on Sunday morning.
Important to know for the 52 km-race

Bib and race pack delivery is on Saturday 10 MARCH from 04 pm to 07.30 pm or on Sunday 11 MARCH from 5:30 am to 6:30 am.
Appointment at 6:30 am Sunday 11 MARCH for the pre-race procedures: briefing and chip reading.
The race starts at 07:00 am, Sunday 11 MARCH.
There is one more drink stand and checkpoint, besides those mentioned in the regulations, situated in loc. Gutturu Pala at 19 km from the start line.
At the food and drink stand nearby the Temple of Antas, you will find someone in charge of intermediate chip reading.
Important to know for the 27 km-race

Bib and race pack delivery is on Saturday 10 MARCH from 04 pm to 07.30 pm or on Sunday 11 MARCH from 7:30 am to 8:30 am.
Appointment at 8:30 am Sunday 11 MARCH for the pre-race procedures: briefing and chip reading.
The race starts at 09:00 am, Sunday 11 MARCH.
Important: even if not indicated as mandatory, we strongly recommend taking a survival blanket with you!

Important to know for the 17 km-race

Bib and race pack delivery is on Saturday 10 MARCH from 04 pm to 07.30 pm or on Sunday 11 MARCH from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
Appointment at 9:30 am Sunday 11 MARCH for the pre-race procedures: briefing and chip reading.
The race starts at 10:00 am, Sunday 11 MARCH.
Important: even if not indicated as mandatory, we strongly recommend taking a survival blanket with you!

We ask you kindly to complete your registration and upload all requested documents within Thursday 08 March on your personal profile on the website wedosport. Please do not send them via e-mail in attachment.

Trail and solidarity

We believe in the importance of leaving a positive legacy in the world we live in, that goes beyond
the day of the competition.
Just like in the past editions, as well this year Trail del Marganai joins a charitable initiative. Together
with a group of local people we plan to buy some inclusive equipment for an outdoor playground in
Domusnovas.
This kind of play equipment allows children with disabilities and special needs to be active side-by-
side with able bodied children.
We will provide more details and information further on.
In order to achieve the target we are going to earmark 2 euro from each registration fee and 1 euro
from each pasta party fee (which is due only for accompanying persons).
This could be one more reason to join us and party with the Trail.
